Clear aligners are a modern way to straighten teeth using a series of clear, removable aligners. They gently move your teeth into a better position over time, without the look of traditional braces.

How do clear aligners work?

You’ll wear a series of custom-made aligners that are designed to gradually move your teeth. Each set is worn for around one to two weeks before moving on to the next one.

There are no wires to tighten or brackets to adjust. Instead, small changes are made with each new aligner. You’ll have regular check-ups so your dentist can monitor your progress.

Why choose clear aligners?

Traditional fixed braces use brackets and wires, which can be noticeable during treatment. While they are effective, many people prefer a more discreet option.

Clear aligners are almost invisible, so most people won’t notice you’re wearing them. They are also removable, meaning you can take them out to eat, drink and clean your teeth.

Each aligner is custom-made for your teeth and is smooth and comfortable to wear. Because the aligners are removable, it’s easier to maintain good oral hygiene compared to fixed braces.

What happens after treatment?

Once your teeth have been straightened, you may choose to enhance your smile further with treatments such as teeth whitening or minor reshaping, if suitable. These options will always be discussed with you in advance.

At the end of treatment, you’ll be given retainers to help keep your teeth in their new position. Retainers can be removable or fixed (bonded). Fixed retainers are placed discreetly behind the teeth and help reduce the risk of teeth moving over time.

How long does clear aligner treatment take?

The length of clear aligner treatment varies from person to person and depends on how complex your case is. Some people need only a short course of treatment, while others may need longer.

Your dentist will explain how long your treatment is likely to take and provide a personalised treatment plan during your consultation.

What impact can orthodontic treatment have?

Orthodontic treatment can improve how teeth function and look. Many patients also feel more confident once treatment is complete, particularly if they were previously self-conscious about their smile.

Should teeth be straightened for health reasons?

The correction of poor dental positioning also improves oral hygiene, as crowded or crooked teeth are often hard to clean properly. With such an improvement, the risk of gum disease for example – which can result in loss of teeth in extreme cases – is prevented.

What other benefits does teeth straightening offer?

Orthodontic treatment improves chewing efficiency by re-establishing the correct relationship between lower and upper teeth, removing the difficulty you may have when chewing certain kinds of food, and so providing better nutrition.
